School History

Stora Åby School began construction in 1932. In October 1933, a roof-topping party with dinner was held. The school was completed by the fall semester of 1934. Henning Engvalls Byggfirma, which was one of the largest construction companies in the area at the time, was commissioned. The school cost 60,000 SEK to build. It was a school for grades 1-7 until 1965 when it was closed and the 49 remaining children were moved to Ödeshög.

The house is built on four floors including a basement, a total of 1400 square meters.

In the basement there was a bath, sauna and laundry facilities, “washing” was scheduled for the students.

As a parishioner, you could book a bathroom, sauna and laundry room.

On the ground floor there were two classrooms, a materials room and a gymnasium.

On the second floor there were two schoolrooms, a caretaker's residence and a library.

On the third floor there was a community hall, a school cafeteria and a school kitchen.

Until the turn of the year 1951-52, Stora Åby was its own rural municipality, after which it became part of Ödeshög rural municipality.

After the school closed, the house was mostly used as a warehouse.

In 2020, Joakim Gustavsson purchased the property and began the restoration of the school to recreate the old school environment.
